Strada Scooter is Back !

It has been a long long time since I last rode my scooter. I have lost track of time over the long wait but it has been 5-6 months since the scooter went in for repair.

It actually took two shops to fix it. I had originally informed PSF of the problems and tried to get MotoGalleria to do the work however they were in the process of closing the retail store and didn't have the time. I then contacted BlackTopMotorsports as they formally worked with PSF. After delays in getting the parts they were finally able to do most of the repairs however upon attempting to ride it in to me they discovered a severe wobble in the rear. They were unable to diagnose the problem thinking something was bent or flawed. I had them drop the scooter off at the PSF headquarters were they diagnosed the problem to be the roller weights had developed flat spots causing the variator and clutch drum to wobble the inner race area of the clutch drum causing it to become elongated making the rear wheel jump up and down.

I found this a little alarming especially since I had experienced similar symptoms in the past which I had mentioned to them. Also the belt and roller weights were both changed at MotoGalleria about 2,500 miles previously. Regardless I am glad that they found the problem and were able to repair it. In all a lot of parts had to replaced but after arguing the actual mileage and warranty they agreed to do the repairs at no cost.

Driving the scooter back on the highways was a little nerve racking. It may be that I have been riding the FZ6 for so long that it just feels naturally so much more stable and responsive. I also noticed that the scooter will only get up to about 50mph whereas it used to easily pull to 55mph and even get up to 60mph on the highway. Hopefully the new parts just need to be broken in. I am just glad that the scooter is finally back home despite it being winter now having missed the entire summer riding season with it. The scooter is however my primary mode of transportation for the time being so as the winter progresses so too will this blog.

Tire Blow Out on the Highway

Just as the title of this post describes my rear tire blew out on my while in the fast lane on highway 95. I was heading to visit my folks and had just made it across the Philadelphia border when I heard a loud pop along with feeling a small explosion under me. My first reaction was to wonder what had just happened when thankfully reality kicked in and it no longer matter what had happened but how I reacted. I immediately pulled in the brakes and pulled off onto the narrow shoulder. Up ahead I could see an emergency vehicle turn around with a state trooper parked their. So I managed to limp it up to where he was parked and I must have startled him as he started screaming at me inquiring what I was doing and instructing me to remain where I was. I quickly responded that I meant to ill harm and had gotten a flat tire. However I think my helmet camera may have spooked him and he took off promising to return to check on me. I called AAA and waited in the hot sun with 3 delicious hoagies but no water to take them down with. While waiting I noticed that very few if any bikers waived to me despite me having nothing else to do. One old school Harley rider stopped and offered his assistance as well as a guy on a Ninja 250, go figure. AAA arrived shortly as they deemed this a priority and I was relieved to see it was a specially configured pickup truck with a powered bed that lowered down to ground level. It was nice and convenient and afforded piece of mind on the ride home. I contacted the stealership which wanted way too much money for replacement tires. In the end I found a fellow rider fairly close who offered his old tires for free. So in the end everything worked out but it was certainly a nervous experience to say the least.

It happened again, I got screwed.

I left work early on Friday to head out to the Valley Forge Convention Center to meetup with the 'VIP' ride through Philly. This was being filmed for the show Super Bikes on the Speed channel with Jason Britton. There were ~300 bikes that rode through Philly stopping at the Art Museum and ending at Pat's and Geno's in South Philly. I was fortunate enough to ride back to the convention center on the backroads with Jason Britton and Jessica Maine along with a few others.

Woke Saturday to meet up with a friend to ride to the actual show, Clutch Control 2007, at the convention center. It was hot out there on the asphalt but the riders really ripped it up. I have some pictures and video (including the entire ride on helmet cam) I will post at a later time. On the way back my friend took me on some really interesting back roads. The sun and the fun really had me by the time I got back. Before putting the bike away I did a quick post ride inspection and what do I find?

- Why does this have to keep happening to me? It's always on a Saturday after 5pm too and no bike shops are open on sundays or mondays. Spent 3 hours in the shop today getting it patched. When the guy comes to get me he says "Oh you've been done for some time I thought you went somewhere." What??? This guy had my keys and bike and then had the audacity to overcharge me by charging me for an hour labor at $65 rather than a tire patch at $55. At least the guy ringing it up and the owner both sided with me.

Downtime

I realize that I haven't posted in a while and I apologize. My ribs still hurt pretty bad and only this week have I gotten back to riding. The weather has been so perfect for riding it has been driving me nuts. Getting to and from work has been a real pain since I hurt myself and so at least I can ride in now. Im not really up for any casual/fun riding yet though until I heal some more. Hopefully the scooter will be back by the time I am feeling better. Although I really think I could have been riding the scooter much earlier since it is automatic which probably wouldn't hurt as much as clutching the bike in the city traffic. The scooter should be at PSF now although I have not heard from them in a while. Until then I may be a little slow on the blog but do hope to be back up and running again soon. Next weekend (assuming I am up for it) I plan to ride out with the SBN riders to the Clutch Control 2007 'stunt' show at the Valley Forge Convention Center. I know that there will probably be few if any scooters there but I will post up if I do make it with some pictures anyways. This event will host the first ever amateur womens stunt competition so should be pretty sexy and exciting. More to come....

Today was the day to be riding a scooter

Unfortunately I am unable to ride at the moment. I slipped and fell on some stairs and cracked my ribs. It is extremely uncomfortable but is ok as long as I don't move around too much. I think right now the bike would just be too much for me to handle and could get away from me. Hopefully though I may have my scooter back this weekend as I finally heard from the dealer after three weeks hiatus.

It was however such a beautiful day. As I sat outside this morning I saw a whole lot of scooters passing by. I had to catch a ride into work though. Today happened to be the first day of classes for many schools and traffic was really bad. To add to this there is a taxi strike in New York and Philadelphia. Although not having as many crazy cabby's on the road was nice.

In addition to above mentioned reasons for it being such a great day to scoot was all the action going around in the neighborhood. I had one neighbor moving out with two large trucks at one end of the street. On the other end was a work crew with three trucks blocking the road as well. Then after finally maneuvering out I discover they are filming a movie just around the corner. Rumor has it is Happenings by starring Mark Walberg.

Bad News about bad scooters

This was recently posted online. It appears that Power Sports Factory has lost one of their first and best dealers in the US. Paul aka Sporty at MotoVento has called it quits. He has decided to no longer sell the Strada or Vento brand scooters. Also in jeopardy is the Chinese Scooter board on Yahoo which he has maintained for the past several years. Sporty is a long time scooter mechanic and has been around since the beginning with Chinese scooters sharing helpful information online. This is certainly discouraging news but I hope that he will stay around on some of the other forums at least. I know he's still got a garage full of scoots and a lot of valuable knowledge.

"I just found out my 2003 Vento Phantom with 5000 miles dropped a valve, I did the motoman break-in and sold it with 2000 miles on it, The belt lasted longer than the motor with all oils Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm forming a opinion that the Chinese 4 stroke motors have a long way to go before I will buy another. With all the other people that have had valve train failures I can not sell scooters that last such a short time. Rubber that falls apart in months is another issue. Intake hoses, Fuel lines are easy to deal with, Fork seals, Engine mount bushings and brake seals are the stuff that scares the crap out of me now that I have been around these scooter for 4 years.

On the other hand my 2001 Malaguti F-12 Phantom water cooled Foggy 50cc 2 stroke replica all the rubber is fine with over 5000 miles on it. With that said I will no longer be selling scooters from China for THE lowest price on the internet until the quality meets my standards, I like to sleep with a clear conscience and selling a scooter for over a $1000 last last for less than 5000 miles is just ripping people off. I'm still going to try to help people on the group but I'm surly not
going to tell anyone to buy one.

The 3 year warranty that takes 3 months to repair

I was really hoping to have a wonderful summer riding my Strada rx200hp scooter. I had planned to be back up on this blog at the beginning of the season. I had even purchased a video camera and bullet camera to record these rides. The sad truth is I haven’t been on my scooter in over 3 months and have heard no word on when, if ever, I might have it back from the shop.

My plan had to been ride the scooter to 5,000 miles and turn it over to Power Sports Factory for inspection and repair if need be. I figured this would be a good opportunity for them to evaluate their product after being ridden hard for two years and 5,000 miles. I even went so far as to leave the scooter completely stock and only had it serviced at PSF’s retail store. Well unfortunately the scooter only made it to 4,960 miles before I was forced to abandon it for repair. Fortunately Strada’s warranty is for 2 years major parts and 3 years on the engine or 5,000 miles. So the break down couldn’t come at a better time.

I first noticed the issue with the scooter as it became extremely unbalanced to the point that I felt unsafe on it. It turned out that the front fork was leaking oil. This is the same problem that I experience one year earlier which that time resulted in me going down. Evidently the scooters were assembled with a soft fork which was designed for the European market and never changed.

The difficulty then arose in trying to get someone to work on this scooter. I contact PSF about 3 months ago informing them of this issue. They were very nice about it but informed me that the retail store was closing and after several weeks of me patiently waiting I tried to locate another dealer. I contacted Blacktop Motorsport which is an authorized PSF drop shipper and was told they could do the work for me. They don’t have a retail store so the owner was kind enough to come pick it up. He seemed very knowledgeable and had ties to PSF so I figured my scooter was in good hands.

Blacktop Motorsport picked the scooter up over two months ago and at that time I was told I should have it back in less than a week. Well I have now had three empty promises of delivery and no word on when I might expect my scooter back. Each time after the delivery date came and went I had to contact them and even told them that if they needed more time that would be fine but please keep me informed. About weeks ago they were on their way to deliver my scooter and were going to ride it in to double check everything. Well I received a call informing me that it wobbled in the rear and that the rim might be bent internally. I was very glad that they caught this problem however it has been over two weeks since and they have not contacted me with any updates.

I suppose in the past I took it for granted that I was so close to PSF and could always go to them for support. With the retail store now closed I was forced to find another dealer that would work on Chinese scooters. From my experiences I can sympathize with those in a similar situation. I think if considering the purchase of a Chinese scooter it is important to remember that it may be difficult to find dealer willing or able to work on the scooter. Until the Chinese scooter market matures and dealer networks established you may find yourself without the support you need. This is certainly something to consider when purchasing a Chinese scooter.

I am still hopeful to get my scooter back but the downtime has really been difficult. When and if I do get it back I will report it here on this blog. In the meantime I will continue riding my FZ6 on a daily basis and will continue to check in here. Please don’t hold it against me as I consider anyone on two wheels to be ok in my book. So to all my fellow two wheelers all the best wishes and I hope to be back among the ranks of the scooterists soon.

The Winner: Yamaha not Yamati

I finally reached the 5,000 milestone and it was not on my scooter but on my Yamaha FZ6. I have been trying to achieve this since early this summer. I had almost achieved this on my Strada rx200hp. I was hoping at that point to turn the bike over to PSF for inspection. Unfortunately the scoot only made it to 4,960 miles. The front fork began to leak oil and I was forced to bring it in for repair. Luckily this did not result in the same outcome from just one year prior when the same malfunction caused me to wreck (link to pictures). Fortunately the warranty on Strada scooters expires at 5,000 miles so most of it should be covered. Unfortunately it has been 3 months now and still no word on when my scooter will be repaired.

Back to the topic at hand, we made it. I realize that 5,000 miles is not that much but at least its a start. (Nearly) 5,000 miles on a Chinese scooter in two years is pretty impressive. On a bike its not that much so. However this is only my first year with the bike. I bought the bike on recommendation from some of the guys at PSF and am really happy with it. I do sometimes get joked at for having the scooter but really each bike has its own place. I wouldn't get rid of either one and ride them both as much as I can when I can. I guess in the end however its not how you get there but that you do. I had set this goal much earlier in the summer and while disappointed to not have achieved it on the scooter I still made it and...

New Strada Classic Scooter Model

Strada Venus Retro

It looks like Power Sports Factory has introduced a new Strada "classic" scooter design to their line up. While their current models trend towards the more modern / sport bike look this is definitely a true throw back in the modern sense. The Venus Retro is built by Qian Jiang in China. This seems to be an evolving trend in the Chinese scooter market. Vento recently introduced their "classic" Hot Rod model (below).

The Strada Venus Retro comes powered by a proven 49.3cc two stroke engine which is shared with both the Strada RX8 and RX8i models. The nearly 5hp (4.9 to be exact) should push this 200lb scooter along at a nice pace. The fuel tank will hold about a gallon and three quarters for a range of about 125 miles. The Venus Retro sports 12" tires and is equipped with front disc brakes and rear drums for stopping power.

I have yet to see one of these in person but if anyone has or owns one I would love to hear what you have to say about it. Drop a note in the comments section and let us know what you think.

I Predict the Weather Report to be Wrong!

So the local news outlets all labeled this weekend the 'perfect weekend'. Temperatures in the low 80's and nice and clear. Friday I rode into work in a solid downpour and was met by the same fate on my ride home. Saturday I will admit was nice and I definitely took advantage.

Today I had big plans to culminate in a lobster dinner run. However mother nature was not in agreement and it has been miserable all day. Today I would have made it to 5,000 miles on the bike too. I suppose the chase is postponed. Now I have some idea how Barry Bonds must have been feeling.

One would think that with all of today's science and technology that we would be better at predicting the weather. Well I think I might be on to something and its really quiet simple. When I hear a weather report I predict its wrong.

Having only my scooter and motorcycle as transportation I am pretty much destined to ride in the rain. I have come to the realization that my ride will be either dry or wet with no real in between. I do my best to be prepared but sometimes its not enough.

I usually don't even bother looking at the weather report and will simply crack a window to get an idea of what its looking like. What bothers me is when I do actually happen to catch the weather and they are wrong. It seems every time they predict rain they are wrong and vice versa.

So the next time I hear 'perfect weekend' I will be prepared for the 'perfect storm'. Now I just have to keep an eye on Hurricane Dean and hope my friends in Jamaica are ok.

Back on the Bike

Well one for two is better than none. The scooter is still in the shop awaiting parts and repair but I did get my motorcycle back last night. As you may recall it picked up a small nail in the rear tire. Rather than buy a new tire I decided to locate a place that could patch it from the inside. From what I hear a mushroom patch (plug/patch combo that goes in from the inside) is the best option. The problem was finding a place that could do it. As you can imagine most stealerships would much rather sell you a new tire that be bothered to repair the old one.

After doing some research on line and talking to a couple of riding friends I decided to take it in and have it done professionally. I started calling around to various shops only to find that many had since closed and were no longer in business. I contact Yamaha City in Philadelphia but was amazed that no matter how many times I told them I had an FZ6 they didn't recognize the model and kept insisting that I had a Suzuki. Well as it turns out they only wanted to sell me a new tire anyways. I then called Philadelphia Cycle Center back up and told them I would be dropping it off. For $55 they patched my tire for me from the inside and did so with a smile.

It was interesting to see a Strada scooter right inside the showroom floor. It was sitting along side a Honda Metropolitan and a few Ruckus' and some bigger Burgmans. The guys there were joking with me about having a scooter and a bike. My response was to tell them how practical it was and how much fun. It was then that one of the guys agreed with my line of reasoning admitting that he too wouldn't mind a scooter.

I have to say that I was very much impressed by Philadelphia Cycle Center. Now they sell Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki but not Yamaha yet knew right away all about my bike. In fact a couple of the employees there have FZ6's. I guess that attests to the FZ6's (underground) popularity. They were very nice and professional and even went out of there way to fix a missing screw and set my idle. All this was done in a timely fashion and the communication with them was excellent.

I am however still waiting for my scooter to be repaired. The scooter has been plagued by shop closings, parts delays, and now evidently it needs some additional work. I am hopeful that I will have it back soon but am no longer counting the days as they turn to months. I know I was trying to make it to 5,000 miles before having a shop give it a good once over but am glad it is getting the attention it needs.

For now I am off to go enjoy what is supposed to be an exceptionally beautiful weekend. I hope that everyone does the same. Please have fun out there and be safe!

Im back on two but not wheels

So after almost a year hiatus I'm back. I apologize for the long absence but did spend the time riding. Its difficult now deciding which machine to ride but I think they really compliment each other well.

The scooter is terrific in the city. It can get around traffic when need be (check applicable laws first of course). Parking for the most part is no problem right up on the curb. I have found that generally if you are against a building out of the way you are ok. With a cover on you will have almost no problems of course this all depends on where you live. The fuel economy and under seat storage really have an advantage for running around town. The scooter just a great all around ride for town.

The FZ6 is really a rocket. The inline four with 14,000 red line is exhilarating . It did take me a little bit to get used to all the power but everything I learned in MSF came back pretty quickly even after a year. I love riding the bike around and as far as sports bikes go it is very versatile. The seating position isn't nearly as comfortable as a scooter but isn't bad ever for hours on end. It all seems to have a large following with plenty of mods available. I think this one might just be a keeper.

I was hoping to be back on this site a little sooner however I have run into some problems that have delayed me. I wanted to return with 5,000 miles on both bikes but neither has made it there yet. The scooter needed some new parts which got delayed and I managed to pickup a nail in the rear tire of my bike. I should have both back any day and am very eager to complete this milestone.

I do have some exciting news to announce. I have recently purchased a helmet camera to record while riding. I have been experimenting with it on the bike and the results look promising. Unfortunately my computer is not powerful enough to edit the video. I do however have a video lab at work I hope I can utilize. I will continue to record and hopefully can compile some interesting clips to be posted.

I hope to be back on two (wheels not feet) soon. Until then ride on and be safe. Remember if you see me sweating it out on the side of the road staring you down its not you its the ride!

Stepping on up

So I did it, what exactly did I do you might wonder? I got a bike, its a 2005 Yamaha FZ6. Riding around on my Strada rx200hp for the past year has been awesome but theres something in me that just wants to push it a little further and a little harder. I found a really good deal on an FZ6 locally and decided I just had to pull the trigger (so to speak). The way I drive this rx200hp it was only a matter of time. I ride pretty much WOT and really work the scoot to its max (which is ~63mph on the highway). Now I don't plan to replace the scooter but just add my new Fizzy into the mix. The scooter has just been too good to me and has a number of advantages over my new bike. For one it gets great gas mileage, has plenty of power for around the city and most highways, plenty of storage, and I can park it almost anywhere. With the new bike however I will be able to take longer and faster trips so its really win win. This blog will still be here but now I will be sharing my time between my two babies. Motorcycle/Scooter Commuting Survival Strategies

I've been commuting to work in the Seattle area daily for a bit over a year now. I'm a year round rider and ride in all weather, except ice and snow. My recent switch to a new bike has caused me to evaluate the survival skills I've picked up over the past year plus of commuting as I translate those skills to the new bike. Below I'll go into some of the strategies I've picked up and employed successfully. The purpose of writing these down is really just to clarify these thoughts for my personal use but perhaps you might find some of it applicable to your riding.

Riding in slow moving traffic

Riding in slow traffic can be a challenge for a motorcycle rider. Unlike a car its more work for you to creep along at low speeds because you need a certain amount of forward motion to keep the bike upright. You also need to focus energy on your clutch work. To make traffic jams less painful I try to keep a fair amount of space in front of me. This space cushion gives me a chance to ride along at a low but constant speed while the cars are creeping, stopping, surging forward, creeping, stopping, etc. There are some disadvantages to this that you do need to be aware of. Many drivers hate the empty space. The car behind you may follow very closely, cars may dart over into your cushion of space because they confuse your extra bit of space with a faster moving lane.

Your extra space may cause car drivers to do goofy things. When I first started employing this technique I had a few irritating experiences. First many cars are going to merge over in front of you, this is fine. Expect it, when you see a car that needs to come over let them, honestly I think most traffic jams are caused by people following too closely which forces cars to cut over then the guy behind them has to slam on his brakes. Anyway your extra space keeps you moving and keeps the rest of traffic moving as well. However as I mentioned above the extra space can cause some drivers to go nuts. I've actually had cars pass me in my lane just so they could get into the extra space. To combat this you need to assert some control over your lane. Typically in traffic I ride in the center of the lane and if the cars behind me seem extra anxious I also weave back and forth across the lane a bit. This lets the cars know you have an entire lane and you intend to use it. I've noticed when I do this cars back off a bit and usually don't try to steal my space.

Learn your daily ride

One advantage to commuting on the same route every day is you learn the perfect line for every curve, off ramp, the best lane positions where you can see traffic as well as be seen. As you ride every day notice how the cars move. When you see a driver do something stupid like cut across two lanes to make an exit or spots where people merge badly make a note of them. On future rides remember these spots and anticipate the stupid tricks people are tempted to pull in those spots. As a daily rider you have a huge advantage over someone who is just passing through. Sometimes a car will just look "wrong" and when it does be ready to take action to avoid trouble. However being overly familiar with your route can be dangerous as well. Never let your familiarity with a route lull you into a sense of false security. Always be alert for the unexpected.

Incentives to Get Stupid

The more I ride to work the more I notice patterns of stupidity on the roads. Particulary riding on the freeway I notice certain places and situations that bring out the dumb in people. Here are a few of them to be aware of:

Off Ramps - Major highway off-ramps can really bring out the stupid in people. Where there is a major exit always be on the lookout for cars cutting across the double white lines to make that exit at the last second and alternatively keep an eye out for the impatient driver who doesn't want to run up the merge lane with the other cars and instead guns it and cuts across the double white lines into the main travel lanes too soon. These drivers may not check their blind spot and they usually don't signal.

Buses - Many people hate to drive behind a bus. Maybe its an ego thing but when riding near a bus anticipate stupid moves. I've seen people driving behind a bus going 65mph cut over and gun it up to 85mph to pass the bus just to get back over into the right lane and drive at 60mph. They don't really want to go faster than 65 but there's something about being behind a bus that drives them nuts. So when you're around a bus give it plenty of room and be aware that people might do goofy, illogical things when driving near a bus.

Fast/Fancy Cars - I hate to employ a stereotype but there's something I notice quite frequently around here, particulary in bad weather and that is the absurdely fast luxury car driver. These drivers seem goofiest in the pouring rain where it seems like they feel their BMW, Mercedes or Land Rover makes them invicible. These drivers will be moving at a high rate of speed regardless of weather, traffic, etc. Your best bet is to let them by as soon as possible. To try to keep up or play their game is going to put yourself at unecessary risk. Expect fast acceleration, quick lane changes, and a general disregard for life and limb.

Tunnels - In dry weather most cars slow down when they enter tunnels, in wet weather they usually speed up or maintain a constant speed. Most motorcyclists will tend to speed up in a tunnel due to the reduced wind turbulence inside them. In wet weather they can be much slippier than the regular roads and your sight lines are usually reduced. On the upside most car drivers won't change lanes in tunnels unless they have to.

Riding in the HOV Lane

I love the HOV lanes around here and riding in them is generally great. They seperate you from the bulk of traffic and most of the lunatics. Maybe people who carpool are nicer but in the general sense I think the HOV lane is the safest lane for the motorcyclist. However there are a few things to be aware of.

Getting Cut Off is Easy to Do

When traffic gets slow or even stopped the HOV lane and subsequently you, keeps moving. It's great zipping past all that slow/stopped traffic isn't it? However this is when you are most vulnerable in the HOV lane. When a lane next to you, in any case, is stopped or very slow you should adjust your speed downward no matter how clear the lane in front of you is. My general rule of thumb is no more than 30mph faster than the adjoining lane. I do this to allow myself more time/space to react if (when) someone cuts over from the slow lane. This has happened to me a bunch of times and over time I've adjusted my strategy for riding in this situation.

The safest way to deal with this is ride on the side of the lane opposite the slow/stopped traffic. I used to ride on the side closer thinking that would put me in driver's side mirrors making them more likely to see me. Wrong, it doesn't seem to help much and it forces you to pull a much more drastic manuever when a car cuts over. So riding on the side opposite is the best. This means if a car cuts over you have slightly more time/space to decide what to do. Maintaining a speed of no more than 30mph above the slow/stopped traffic is probably the hardest part. In fact you may get cars following you very closely or flashing their lights at you. This has happened to me twice, once on the bike and once in my car. I just ignore them. If a car cuts over at 5-10mph and you're going 60mph it will be 4x more difficult to stop/avoid than if you were going 30mph. I've had cars cut over in front of me so many times now I just won't go any faster, the guy behind me be damned, I'm not taking that risk.

When riding on the highway in general always be aware of your environment and where you can and can't go in an emergency. In many cases you can use your motorcycle's relatively small size to your advantage by putting the bike on the white line and avoiding being hit. Also be ready to the hit the horn and let that guy drinking coffee, eating breakfest and talking on his cellphone know that you're there.

The Light is Green, So What?

When I'm first at a stoplight and the light turns green I don't go. I sit there for a couple seconds, take a look in both directions and then go. There have been a bunch of times I've done this and seen a car cross the intersection in front of me, running the red. I'm not saying sit there long enough to make the guy behind you honk, but just wait until you're positive the intersection will be clear before you take off. You always have to remember when riding that on a motorcycle there's no such thing as a fender bender. The accident being the other guy's fault is not going to save you pain and suffering. So take an extra few seconds to be sure before you go. It's helpful too if you really swivel your head around, both so you can see and so the people behind you can see clearly what you are doing. I try to always do this and the only time I was honked at was once when I sat there watching a red light runner go by.

Avoiding Trouble on the Streets

I employ a few tactics for riding on the surface streets that have come in pretty handy, helping me avoid trouble. First off is be predictable. When moving through intersections or down streets its best to limit your acceleration, braking and turning to something that generally resembles what the cars around you are doing. Going too fast or too slow puts you at odds with drivers who are anticipating where you are going to be, or not even noticing you at all! If you dart through traffic at a high rate of speed you increase the odds that a driver won't notice you or will not estimate your speed properly resulting in an accident. Also be aware that some drivers assume motorycles don't need as much space or can manuever out of the way so they may take seemingly inappropriate chances around you. In these cases it is helpful to assert your lane position by using the entire lane and, if needed, employ the horn to remind drivers you are there or let them know what you think about their driving.

When approaching a car that might turn left or pull out in front of me I never watch the driver's eyes. Drivers may make eye contact with you then pull out anyway, either because you just thought they made eye contact, they've misjudged your speed or they're simply looking through you. To avoid this I never watch the driver, instead I watch their front wheels. The wheels tell you where the car is going to go when they mash the gas. Also any movement of the wheels can be perceived much quicker than the movement of the entire vehicle. Be prepared to stop. It is best to ride as if the driver will pull out in front of you.

The Friday Night Fight at the Lights

When heading home on Friday nights always be extra careful. Traffic patterns change on Friday nights, people leave work early, people go places they don't normally go. You are more likely to see last minute lane changes, fast drivers, stopped traffic in strange places and the like. In general just be aware that Friday won't be quite the same as any other trip home and expect the unexpected. Most importantly don't be in a hurry yourself! I use my bike to get to/from work and I run alot of errands on my bike as well but I never use the bike to make up for lost time. What I mean is if you're in a hurry take the car. Or if you're running late just forget about it while you're on the bike. Enjoy the ride, stay alert, ride smart, and resist the urge to use your bike's superior speed and manueverability to make up some time. One trip to the emergency room will waste more time than you'll save in a lifetime of fast riding.

So it has been just over a year now since I wrecked my car and got bit by the scooter bug. Its been a blast riding my Strada rx200hp all around. I really haven’t minded not having a car but every once in a while I see one that makes me miss it. Tonight I saw one that I would SO give up my scooter for (BMW Alpina). 'Lethal' playground stunt blasted

A park stunt in which two girls were thrown from a roundabout powered by a moped is being investigated by police.

Officers were alerted to the incident in Crawley, West Sussex, after seeing video footage of the prank on a US-based website.

The video shows a spinning motorcycle wheel being placed on the outer edge of the roundabout by two teenage boys. Two girls are crouched in its centre.

Insp Mark Piper said the stunt was similar to a "high-speed road crash".

The roundabout eventually reaches a speed of about 20mph (32km/h) and the girls, believed to be 12 or 13 years old, are flung off violently.

'Phenomenally dangerous'

Mr Piper added: "This is an extremely dangerous practice and for the safety and welfare of all concerned we are urgently trying to contact and speak to the participants."

A spokesman for Crawley Borough Council described the stunt as "phenomenally dangerous" and said it could have ended in a fatality.

"It is a bit like Jackass but this is a lot more dangerous because it involves children rather than people old enough to know better," he said.

"We have checked local hospitals and we have been assured that no emergency admissions have been made relating to this."

I have been doing a lot of riding recently after a couple weeks without my scooter I feel compelled to rack up the miles. I know have over 2,600 miles and will continue to add on to that. I have been very busy with work as of late but nearly every day after work I take a ride around the city before succumbing to hunger and am forced to hunt down dinner. One of the nice advantageous of a small scooter is that there isn’t a restaurant out of reach for me and parking is always a breeze.

Besides hunting food on my scoot I prowl for two other things, other riders and women. I will usually cruise the hot spots at night looking for either of the above. When I find the women I fall in love and when I find a group of sport bike riders I tear up the streets with them. Often I think they don’t initially realize I am on a scooter but after seeing that I am able to hold my own with them I tend to gain some respect. It really is fun to be riding in a large pack and assuming everyone knows how to group ride it can be much safer.

Now safety is something I am sure we are all concerned with but sometimes it isn’t enough just being aware of the dangers rather than taking measures to prevent a potentially dangerous situation. Now in the last few weeks, especially with the holiday, I have noticed many cagers with an obvious disregard for the laws of the road. I can not tell you how many cars I have witnessed blatantly run red lights and/or cut off bikers.

This brings me to my point which was emphasized to me by some of the other riders I have been out with: Protect your lane! Being that we are only riding on two wheels means that we have a decisions to make about which third of the lane to ride. Often I find myself moving over to the outside of the lane when coming to a stop at a light. My reasoning has always been to avoid the slick spots caused by cars leaking oil.

Well while at a light the other night with another biker occupying the lane next to me a car came speeding right in between us, splitting the lane, and proceeded to run the red and cut four lanes over to make a left exit. I look over at the rider next to me who’s mouth is open almost as far as mine but what came out of his made much more sense then the profanity spewing from mine. What he told me was that I need to be careful and protect the lane. He pointed out that cagers are quick to disrespect bikers but being on a scooter leaves us especially vulnerable. So next time your out there riding, especially at night, be aware and protect your lane!

All the rain that has come down has meant some bad days for riding and even worse flooding all up and down the East Coast causing many road closings. Fortunatly (depending how you look at it) I just got my scooter back all fixed up after our fall. Sticking to our safety theme I bring you the revolutionary new design in helmets. I think I will let the product description speak for itselef:

"It’s made with “intelligent molecules” that harden on impact. Sounds a bit iffy—don’t you want the thing to harden just slightly before impact? But apparently it works, because they’ve used the product in many test-falls and everyone is amazed at how well it protects the noggin (that, or the concussion is making them all really st00pid). The company also makes shoes and sports gear, but it seems to be available only in Europe for around $70."

-I do believe I have seen similar materials used on military vehicles and the occasional off-road hummer as shocks. Essentially its a metal mix that hardens rapidly. You do have to figure that a plastic shell would at least be requireed to secure the chin area and visor. This would mean however the perhaps helmets could become reusable.

Its official the new Strada RX260CE is on the way. I know PSF has been working on this scoot for some time now and have put in some real time and effort. I actually got the chance to see the proto-type RX260CE while touring the new facility a few months ago. It wasn't much to look at as it was just frame and engine but it did look impressive. This new model will be the second most powerful in the fleet, behind the SS300, but will be housed in a similar body style to the current RX150CE. With so much power in such a small scooter this should really prove to be a winner. Evidently they have invested 2.5 million dollars for R&D and production molds through their manufacturer Qianjiang Motorcycle Group of China so you can bet PSF is banking on it! Can't wait to see one in person and hopefully test ride it.

-No word yet on expected delivery.

PSF Steps Its Game Up

What can be more frustrating than being put on hold with really bad music or how about not being able to talk to anyone who has a clue, well if your needing to get answers from PSF you need not worry. PSF President Alan Leson recently announced their plans for an expanded and upgraded communications system with up to the minute inventory information. There new 35,000 square foot facility will be the first to be wired with multiple phone lines setup by department. In addition the facility will be setup with a state of the art inventory control system enabling them to be able to tell you on the spot about your part or scooter request. With 1,000-1,500 scooters on hand at any given time and the organization of the their new parts department it should be easy to get what you need when you need it (except yesterday I would assume). Personally I can say I have had very good luck getting help but this should be reassuring for those who don't live so close as help will be only a phone call away.

Vento set to invade Canada!

Apparently NDPowerSports is offering a scooter which is identical to the Vento Phantera GT5 but badged as a Yamati. You will notice that the picture used is taken directly from Vento's website. According to PSF these are not their scooters and this company is not an authorized dealer.

So today I managed to get my first fall out of the way. I laid the scooter down pretty good but was able to get right back up and starter her up. I must say I am actually somewhat relieved because as they say: There are two types of riders those that have gone down and those that are going to. I now know which type of rider I really am.

Unfortunatly for me I didn't get my summer protective gear yet but besides a few scrapes and sore shoulder Im none the worse for the experience. My helmet even managed to survive without a mark to tell. The scooter however experienced a decent amount of damage to some of the body panels which are easily replaceable. The scooter still runs fine but I am going to go a head and have it checked out anyways.

The lesson to be learned here is that at some point in time the inevitable will happen. When it does you want to make sure to be prepared and react accordingly. I did my best to keep the scooter up but in the end realized it best to just let it go. Im very glad that it happened as it did and nobody got hurt. Another quick point I would like to make is that this accident occured just around the corned from my house. Sometimes I think if Im riding to the store down the street that I don't need my helmet or gear but in the end I always put it on. Statistically you are much more likely to get into an accident within a few miles of your house.

So please ride safe and heads up at all times. It also helps to keep the scoot up too.

Coming to a scrEEching halt !

That is exactly how it went down this evening while out for my nightly ride. I was traveling down Deleware Ave, along the river, and was coming up to my turn which is a left hand arrow off a 3 lane road. I was ahead of all the traffic except this one car in front one lane over as I was in the left most lane. I had to think that there was the possibility that this driver might turn left and did a quick mental note just in case. Well before I even had time to finish the scenario out in my head the driver, without signal swerved into my lane. I grabbed two big handfuls of brakes and laid down some rubber. I knew that just in case I was going to have to clear this car and being attentative to his maneuver I steered clear. In the end I was able to properly execute an emergency brake and swerve. I do have to plug the MSF course here as much of what they taught me as well as tips I learned from the Proficient Motorcycling book came into play in this situation. The reason I am writing to tell of this story is not to sell you on a course or book but just a note to ride heads up and think ahead. I recall from my Drivers Ed course back in high school that they tell you when going through a traffic light to pick a spot and go from there. Well I think that is analogous to my point in that you need to look ahead and observe the situation and know what your going to do just 'in case'.

Super White 35w Bulbs Installed!

That's right folks the rain has finally stopped and I was able to get to work installing these super white 35w bulbs from Jiangwayne. This is the description on their site:

Pure white H4 Quartz Halogen bulb,
like HID lights which are closer to natural sunlight,
increased safety and improved night vision.

While a little pricey I will let you be the judge of them. I do have to admit I REALLY like the way they look. The stock bulbs don't necessarily glow that bright and have a real yellow tint to them. These bulbs have a clean 'crisp' look to them. Many of the "super white" bulbs you can purchase for automobiles aren't matched (in other words different tints) and look too blue (which is illegal). These look to be a perfect pair and don't have that over the top effect. Take a look at these pictures I shot:

Introducing the PFS Performance, GY6 125/150cc Oil Cooler kit. Designed to provide oil cooling and lubrication to protect the cylinder kit during high speeds:

While this won't exactly turn your current gy6 into a Strada rx200hp it will get you closer. This unit installs behind your front wheel and essentially circulates the oil through the cooling element. The rx200hp has a similar setup but also has lines cut into the engine block. One cautionary note if you do go ahead with this upgrade is to check the connections for leaks tightening the bolts if necessary. If they aren't sealed and oil leaks out it could potentially get onto your tires or brakes.

The Ideal Jacket

Previously I had featured a revolutionary new airbag jacket design (link). Well here we have another company marketing a similar product. I don't think either are for sale yet in the US but I have been told they could be here in as little as a month. Check it out for yourself:

The "Hit Air" jacket uses CE certified armor to protect the shoulders, elbows and the spine but most importantly, the "Hit Air" jacket also incorporates an air cushion system. In the event of an accident and a rider is thrown from the motorcycle, the air cushion instantly inflates (within 1/2 second) to protect the rider's body. Activation is simple and automatic. A coiled wire is attached to both the motorcycle and the jacket. Once the rider and the motorcycle are separated, the coiled wire pulls a "key" out of a gas release system and inert gas inflates the air cushion. The inflated jacket provides the necessary impact protection. After a few seconds the gas is automatically released through the gas release valve.

The "Hit Air" jacket with its instant activation is the ideal jacket for motorcyclists!

Strada eurojet RX150i

The Strada eurojet RX150i uses a completely different frame than the Triton. It's not even close! The entire frame was built from the ground up to accommodate a newer designed GY6 crankcase, cylinder and head. None of the parts from this engine will bolt up to the GY6 engine that most of you are accustomed too. The crankcase has more volume, the cylinder bolt spacing is wider, the head and valve cover is a new design with racing cam installed on the assembly line. Even the center stand and cooling fan are different!

We have been working on this model for the last 6 months including the new Hybrid Exhaust system that is standard on the bike. The exhaust has tuned baffles welded inside the expansion chamber that act as any other 4 stroke system would and was tuned using a dyno. It wasn't just thrown on the bike as bling! We had several requests for this look going back a year and finally had the engineers come up with a design that did not fall on it's face at 6000RPM which is what the original problem was with the Vento Phantom 2/4 stroke exhaust pipe.

Also the engine has more output then any other GY6 scooter from China today. You won't find this body design "NOT A TRITON" anywhere but on a Strada unless we license the design to other manufactures through Qianjiang Motorcycle Group, QJUSA and PSF-MotoStrada.

Another change was the air filter system which is mounted outside of the engine compartment and allows the carb to capture more air in a shorter distance verses the old accordion hose and filter that most of you are use too.

More new features include the Japanese style sportbike spot-beam using a magnified glass Lenz over the bulb for illumination which intensifies the light for better night driving. The lighting portion is regulated and will not dim as other models do when at idle. It uses the same 10 coil high output magneto as our Strada RX200HP.

There are dozens of improvements including a very simple one, more padding in the seat! This may seem silly but as most of you know the seats on most of the scooters that come out of China are of very poor quality. We had the factory add a few inches of padding for the heavy weight out there since it really makes a difference on those long rides even after it's broken in. If your not happy with the extra padding you could always take it to a upholstery shop and have them shave the foam down to fit your butt.

We are already working on modifying our HP150 Carbon Fiber exhaust system for those who want a different look and sound. Here's a picture of the RX150i in Silver with a modified header and pipe installed.

I got some info on the Air Induction,
Air Induction Cylinder Head system Its main purpose is to filter and measure intake air flow into the engine. Air is filtered by the air cleaner which passes into the intake manifold. The throttle valve controls the volume of air entering into the engine based on the driver himself (herself).

From the Air Cleaner, the air flows through an Air Flow Meter, (air valve) to the intake chamber via the hose running to the intake Manifold to the cylinder. The air induction head system gives more power and more torque. Helps eliminate unmeasured air into the intake system and any deposit build up on the intake valves.

I stopped by the PSF store today and got to see the guys working on Ricks (Underground Race) scooter. They were installing a new engine with larger head and I believe they ported and polished it as well. I will have to ask Alan the details. It sounded awesome with the carbon fiber exaust. They also had a 'sick' 500cc kawasaki? atv there. The sound from this machine was menacing and the engine was beautiful. Anyways besides my brief visit not much else to report but did want to say hi to all my fellow enthusiasts.

SS300 Test Ride

This afternoon I had agreed to help a fellow scooterist out from the local scooter club getting his scooter inspected. He has a nice yellow Vento Triton and wanted to use it to take his motorcycle test tomorrow. I was a bit nervous as initially I thought he was driving it to the DMV as it requires going on the highway but luckily he has one of those nifty tilting tail-gate carriers. Now I was going to suggest we meet at the MotoStrada/PSF Store however they are closed on Mondays. So instead we met at Wal-Mart of all places. He got his scoot down and had it up and running in no time and we drove the short distance to the inspection station.

The nice thing about riding a scooter is that at the inspection station they have you pull right up between the cars and you get immediate assistance. They did however require he have 3 pieces of reflective tape on his helmet, as per the law, and luckily I had remember this and came prepared. After that it was just a matter of waiting for the computers to work and we were out of there.

While we were waiting I called up the PSF warehouse and got in touch with Alan there. When I last saw him at the store he had offered that I could stop by and see the new warehouse. He said it would be no problem if my buddy and I wanted to stop by so we did. There new warehouse is right next door to their other one but what they have managed to do in the new space is terrific. There is a nice showroom setup with a reception area and offices.

In back is a garage/work area with all sorts of neat projects. Soon they will be installing a dyno in an adjacent room. Large parts department with a maze of shelves. (They even had full stock of their ATV parts for models 2 years out of production.) Alas there were scooters towering above and beyond almost everywhere. I was told the other warehouse was just as crowded.

Alan was gracious enough to give us the tour and hang out with us for a bit. I know he is a very busy man so it was extra nice of him. I could tell my new friend had been bitten by the upgrade bug as Alan allowed me to test ride the new SS300. Let me tell you that thing is the Cadillac of scooters!

First to start the SS300 the kickstand has to be up, which I think makes good sense. Once started in ran smoothly and and was extremely quiet. I assume that is one advantage to a liquid cooled scooter. I took it for a spin and when I would come to a stop I would think the engine had cut off since I couldn't hear it. Its pretty fast although I didn't push it too hard as it had 6 miles and not enough road. Alan told me it would do 80 no problem and I believe him. Even at that speed I think it would be comfortable to ride. With its xtra big fitted seat, low ride, good suspension, and windscreen it felt just like being in a Caddy with the top down (so to speak). The braking felt very adaquet and the turn signals made a pleasant beep when engage.

Over all I was very impressed. Seems a little big for in the city unless you were to park it with the motorcycles and not the bicycles. The underseat storage was huge though! So that is definatly a benefit as my full face helmet fit fine with tons of left over space. If I had the money I probably would have purchased it to cruise interstate as well as to the shore on but its probably good I didn't. I do have my eye on it and since I plan to keep my rx200hp perhaps one day this would make a good second vehicle. Together that would still only be 4 wheels right...

You read correctly folks, sold out! It being such a nice night I decided to go for a ride. Seems like everyone and there mothers were out there too. I managed to get 15 miles in before heading back to Center City for fuel. Low and behold I pull up to the pump only to be greated by a "Sold Out" sign, not even an apology. I glance around only to see every single island with similar signs and a line of pissed of drivers. This is not a small station either it is probably the most busy in the city. Luckly I keep a container of gas at home. After seeing that though I think I may need a drink unless the local well is dry too?!? I didn't originally purchase my scooter because of the cost of gas but after last summer and now this I sure am glad. We are going to see a lot more riders soon the way things are headed. Shoot they announced today that NJ is going to re-instate self pumps in the hope it helps. What the heck is going on here folks?

Elusive: Strada Veloce "Tomahawk SE150"

Here it is folks the new Strada Veloce! I don't know if this one ever made it to the product line-up but looks remarkably like the rx150ce. I had noticed in my visit to MotoStrada last week that the rx150 appeared to have a dual modular headlight design much different from the common 'clone' setup. I do have to admit that I really think PSF needs to come up with better model names. I do love my rx200hp but it gets old having all the 1300cc riders laughing at my "200hp" or when the occasional idiot thinks thats what it really means. Truth be told, if PSF made a 200hp bike i'd ride it (like they say: I'll do anything once & hopefully twice).

Yesterday was such a beautiful day that I decided to take a ride over the bridge to visit PSF. I tried to call ahead to see if Alan was in the warehouse but was told he was on 'vacation'. As it turns out he was supposed to be off last week but was coming into work still, as they were so busy, and thus was off this week. Well guess who I ran into at the store? You guessed it Alan himself obviously not on vacation as the store was busy as could be. They must have sold at least 4 rx200hp's while I was there which I believe was all they had at the store. It appears that the rx200hp really is the peoples choice.

I did have a chance while waiting for Bruce/Alan to check out the rest of the scooters on display. I've decided after looking at the Modesta150 that I really like it. The dual disc brakes and gas shocks should make the scoot a real hot seller. The one disadvantage is that it is not a true step through. I also noted that while previously I thought the Modesta to be the same as the Vento Pantera GT5 that there are unique styling differences between the two. The Vento has a dual lamp setup and some extra 'carbon fiber' flare. Also the windshield on the Vento was clear (as opposed to smoked on the Modesta), slightly taller, and not quiet as finished in appearance. Overall they are both very nice scooters and even Tank has taken on this body style.

I have to say though that the service with Strada in phenomenal. I do have the advantage of being so close to the source but even in their sales tactics I witnessed nothing but honost answers to customers questions. They nicely explained to one customer the true limitations of the smaller 50cc scoots (not in an attempt to upsell at all) and talked another customer through the DMV process in his state. I realize such service is to be expected but unfortunatly often lacking from many dealers. I even had a slight problem with my brake rotor after getting oil on it (my fault) which they fixed for me on the spot for free! So far I have had two warranty issues (the other being a cracked air intake tube) both attributed to how hard I push to scoot and both of which were fixed under warranty.

While only there for an hour or two I did have a chance to speak with Alan briefly about whats been going on behind the scenes and I must admit it sounds very exciting. I got to see a number of engines they were working on in the service center and even Rick's (the underground scooter racer) tricked out rx200hp. Its blue just like mine with lots of carbon fiber, blue tires, chrome rims, and evidently has been through a couple tuned engines with a new one on the way. Its my understanding he races motorcycles and this is his pit bike which he runs at some of the tracks. The folks at PSF are very dedicated to performance development and design. Im also told that the 250's are on their way and there are some real nice suprises on the way too, so stay tuned!

For now I can tell you that for those who have already purchased their scooters that some new accessories are coming such as 2 new (digital) guage clusters and hopefully some nice windscreens. They also have the colored tires I featured previously in this blog as well as 3 & 5 spoke chrome rims. They seem to be working hard to find just the right mix of products whether it be performace or cosmetic. So for those looking to upgrade- scoot, parts, or looks keep an eye out here as I will do my best to bring you the latest and greatest news for Chinese Scooters.

I hope everyone was out enjoying Spring and riding it up on their scoots! I haven't even had a chance to check my email for about a week. It has been my buddies birthday all week and I've been glad to tag along! I have been out on the streets and have seen all the scooters and bikes out it, really must be Spring. I do have some interesting news bits to share but for now must get some much needed rest. I do want to let everyone know that a review of the Super White Light Bulb H4 12V35W/35 is coming so stay tuned.

rx200hp Progress Report

I realize that my entries have been a little slow coming as of lately and I do apologize. Work and other commitments have been keeping me quiet busy although I have found time to ride, usually late at night. I thought as I have now passed the 1500 mile mark a progress report may be in order.

As most of my readers already know the majority of my riding is done in Center City Philadelphia the rest on the surrounding highways and bridges. There is much speculation as to the suitability of these scooters for real highway riding and truthfully they are not the best although for short runs an rx200hp can easily hit 60mph on a flat. I have gone faster on a decline or with a tailwind but feel comfortable hitting 55mph without any trouble. Therefore I have decided that given its size and speed this truly is the perfect city scooter.

Now I know there are those that will easily argue that many of the classics are just as good and I really do appreciate them as most riders seem to prefer them but given what I paid I can’t complain. The one thing I don’t really have to worry about too much is theft for parts which is a slight piece of mind. Also any replacement part/panel is generally cheaper. Another advantage the rx200hp has, although not water cooled, is the oil cooler feature. I have to imagine that given the stop and go traffic conditions I experience this is a great help towards keeping the engine temperature in check.

In regards to the general conditions here in the City if you have ever visited you will know the streets are horrible! With so many potholes and even cobble stone roads the 13” wheels provide reassurance and slightly better stability at speed I would have to imagine. I have hit some holes before that I thought would swallow us and I have also been launched completely airborne by some of the bumps here. Another constant obstacle is the excessive oil slicks to be found at most every stoplight along with painted strips and manhole covers when it rains. I do try to be careful out there often traveling the routes I know but do really try to push this scooter to see what its capable of and ride in any weather. I have managed in the past to lean so far into turns as to scrape the kick stand. This past week I even went so far as to ride down a couple flights of stairs on the scooter and it always feels solid under me (Don’t try this at home).

All in all I have to say I have been very impressed. While naturally I have the itch for more power I do also have to wonder whether I really need it given how I push the rx200hp. I have been thinking about some minor modifications but will likely wait until the warranty expires. So far though I have only had minor inconveniences. I had the brake light go out on me early on as well as one of the headlight bulbs recently. I lost 2 bolts on the muffler which is surprising given the conditions I ride. Lastly I had my air intake hose crack which was replaced under warranty. Now keep in mind I had my scooter assembled by the dealer and have done all regular maintenance myself except for the tune-up/check-up at 1,000 miles.

rx200hp update

Word was recently leaked that the Strada rx200hp is due for an upgrade. Previously being the only chinese 'clone' with an oil cooler it will also be first with a factory installed 'big head'. The extra room the head provides allows for additional cooling. New models will come with both the oil cooler and the big head. Below you will find a picture and description of a few other unique parts to the rx200hp.

The stock GY6 head is the right image. The valve train on the Strada rx200hp engine is completely different then any other GY6 as is the rocker arm assembly, rockers and cam shaft. Also note the position of the spark plug hole and the higher height of the valve cover. The large valve cover is a dead give away that sets it apart from other engines.

REAL Top Speed?

There has been much advertising,questioning, and speculation of the REAL top speeds of these scooters and perhaps I can shed some light on this. I am going to claim a REAL top speed of 55mph on my rx200hp. Now I say REAL in the sense that I can comfortably reach this speed in a relatively short distance. I feel comfortable cruising on most roads with a limit up to 55 mph. I even take it on the highway for brief runs but only in either real heavy traffic or hardly any at all.

Also many riders have reported that their speedos are off by sometimes as much as 5-10mph at the top end. As far as I have been able to determine by pegging against cars is that mine is right on with at most 1/2 mph variance but that could be the car too. The inaccuracy of some guages often lead to confusion. Also some read in kmh and some in mph.

Now Im sure that if I was doing rural riding I could hit a higher speed (and I have hit 61) but of course the road grade, wind, and rider weight all come into account as well. Now Im usually cruising at 20-50 and in stop and go traffic so top speed really isnt a concern but hopefully this will help some of you in dispelling the myths and lies of top speed.

I realized I haven't posted all weekend and my excuse is I've been riding! The weather has been incredible being up near 70 its gotta be just a teaser but Im not complaining. After not being able to find a ride for nearly a week I finally picked my scooter up from the official MotoStrada store. I have to say thank you very much to Bruce and Alan and the scooter is running great. As you may recal nothing was really wrong with it but I felt I should take it in for a good once over especially since I can only work on it outside. (On a side note: one of my neighbors randomly left me a really nice oil drain pan and I have no idea who but they must know whats up! Thanks.) I must say the new store is looking really nice and will soon sport an upstairs lounge which is quiet big. Anyone in the Philly/Jersey area should plan to meet up there soon for some rides!

I must have put on nearly 100 miles since getting the scooter in Friday and have been loving every minute of it. I took it out with my music player for the first time as generally I think it a bad practice but actually found it very enjoyable. I do have a fanny pack I retrofitted with speakers I can take but sometimes that is hard to hear. I was worried with headphones I may be distracted but in fact I think it was good to be moving to my own beat. Saturday night I went out riding with some real cycles its a good feeling to join up with a pack of super-bikes and be able to hold your own (at least around the city). I've been thinking a lot about upgrading to a larger scooter/bike but tell you the truth this rx200hp has met all my needs and continues to impress me. So no need to panic about the blog going anywhere anytime soon. Stay tuned and keep on riding!

Bruce from MotoStrada called today to say that the scooter is done. Besides the normal maintenance it sounds like the air intake was cracked and repaired under warranty. Hopefully tomorrow someone can give me a ride over there so I can be out on the roads again this weekend. I will report back with details.

Scooter in the shop for the first time

Before everyone panics, let me explain: I've passed 1,000 (city) miles and felt it would be good to have it given a good once over. PSF has opened a new retail store in Cherry Hill, NJ called MotoStrada which also does maintenance and performance upgrades. I must say I was very impressed with the store and the variety of scooters there was just awesome. Unfortanatly I didnt have much time to hang out in fact I never even found out how much the service will be, still waiting on that call. I managed to save a little money and hope to put whats left to start in on some performance upgrades. I will most likely do more come the spring when Ive saved more. Supposedly they will need it all week which leaves me without any transportation. I can't wait to get my scooter back and feel how it rides, everday on my smoke breaks I walk out to check on everyone elses scooters. I did see a red clone scooter today up riding down the street. Well just know that until I have mine back I will have my eyes on the rest of you. Have fun out there!

To all those following this blog I apologize for the lack of recent updates. Between the holidays and the start of the new year I have been terribly busy. Truth be told, while Im at it, I spent a week driving around in a borrowed SUV (Toureg). It has been a while since I've been in a vehicle with 4 wheels and to be honost it was a little much. This SUV had indicators and lights for everything possible: we're talking front and back exterior alarms, gps, triptronic, audio controls on the steering wheel, temp alarms, you name it! Not to mention the amount I had to spend on gas!!!!!!! $50 just to fill it up!!! We'll not to worry, I've returned the SUV to its rightful owner after using it for all those errands I couldn't accomplish on my scooter. Its nice to be back on two wheels. Its been fairly mild and to be honost I really missed it. So for all those who have been patient please rest assured I haven't disappeared and Im still out there on the mean streets. With nearly 850 miles Im approaching another service and will be switching to synthetic oil. I've also got plans for some additional LED mods and recently got a nice tail bag which I will review. I realize it has been a few days since my last update and I apologize. I just got a kitten and things at work have been very busy leading up to this holiday season. The good news is that I will be off for a while after tomorrow. The bad news, and no suprise, is that some of those cagers on the road really do hate scooterists. Last night I was riding down to my friends house and had a cabby stop in the middle of the street, without warning, to let someone off. Well as I went by I made it known to him that this was unaccepatable. Well he reacted as you can imagine by proceeding to tell me off and threaten to run me off the road. I guess it wasn't just a threat as he literally did try his best to run me over. He was all over the road, in back of me, in front, from lane to lane. Finally I saw my opportunity and gunned it past him and took the long way to my friends. I wish I had taken his cab number and had been able to use my phone to call the police. Unfortunatly I couldn't with all my gear on and I decided rather than fuel the flames I better take it like the better man and stay living. In reality this sort of thing is too common an occurance but road rage when your on only 2 wheels can be a bit more nerve-racking. Hopefully I won't have any more stories like this but I thought Id share and hope such a thing never happens to any fellow rider. Stay safe out there and ride heads up, don't expect that those other "drivers" know or care what they are doing out there.

LED Install

I went ahead and installed the new LED bulbs tonight. It was actually quiet easy. This time around I had no trouble with the brake light thankfully. The only hitch I ran into was trying to replace the 2 screws under the front lip of the headlight assembly. For some reason they just spin in there I even tried teflon tape. The lights themselves look real nice. They aren't quiet as bright as the orginals but I think work just fine. LEDs are also much more directional so I tried to get as many in a cluster as possible. The brake light is supposed to flash upon hard braking I will have to test this tomorrow. The picture above is of 194 bulb LED clusters (UV). I finally received my set of LED replacement bulbs after waiting nearly 2 weeks. Hopefully tomorrow I can get them installed. I ordered a LED replacement for the brake light which is supposed to flash rapidly if a panic stop occurs. I will be interested to see how this feature works. I also got replacements for the turn signals and a UV set to put in the running lights. Hopefully this will slightly tint the headlight assembly without getting me into trouble. I will try to take before and after pictures if possible although I would rather work in the light. I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

Modesta 150cc Scooter Preview

Ok so I presume that many of you already know about and have seen pictures of this new offering from Power Sports Factory, the MotoStrada 150. I had the opportunity to see it in person today and let me tell you it is one sharp looking scooter. Unfortunatly I was just passing through and did not have a camera with me but I will be back there soon with one in tow. I can though do my best to describe some of its features to you. Im sure PSF can give everyone the real low down but here were my impressions. The scooter at first glance looking head on looks shorter and wider than the rx200hp. Upon inspecting both closely I think they are actually the same width but the motostrada does appear shorter. For one the top does not turn like the rx200hp, excuse me if I dont know what the part is called. The handlebars on the motostrada go straight down into the body with only the wheel turning where as on the rx200hp the whole top part with the lights turns. The instrumental panels are relocated almost flat down in front of the handle bars. You almost have to peak forward to look but I do like how they are non intrusive. They are protected by an integrated windshield which actually raises the overall height above the rx200hp. Built into that windshield is driving light. In addition to this added driving light there are turn indicators in the fairings. Signals are still located in the mirrors like the rx200hp but unlike the rx200hp these mirrors are higher, angled, and elongated to greatly improve visibility. The seat (both on the center stand) is higher on the motostrada than the rx200hp but only slightly. The seat itself appears to be more comfortable, although I did not really sit on them while on the center stand. It is wider and also features more curvature in the backrest. Doesn't appear to leave much room to scoot back but your 2up buddy will definatly appreciate the seat. There are nice metal foot rests for them as well. In fact the rider is treated to the same detail. However one point to note is that it is not a true step through in the sense that the rx200hp is. There is a low hump running down the center line. Also absent is a front glove box although it the underseat storage space does appear larger. Combine all these feature comforts with some excellent mechanical upgrades and I think we have a winner. Dual gas shocks in the rear with discs brakes front and back will make this one sweet ride. The color they have in the showroom is completely silver down to the front wheel well. I am assuming this is powered by the same gy6 engine, perhaps with some PSF love infused, and will thus be compatible with the great upgrade gadgets PSF has been rolling out.

Is it just me or do some of the pictures not show up? For example in my post a few nights ago about the snow there should be 3 photos. At home I see them all but from work only one, at least its the one of my scoot. I will have to look into this.

While some of you are waiting and waiting and waiting (ok you get the idea) for that Xbox 360 to hit shelves it may be time to start thinking about something else. Under Cover Scooter

No scooting into work for me today. From the National Weather Center:

“A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 7 AM EST TUESDAY.

FIVE TO SEVEN INCHES OF SNOW IS FORECAST. ACCUMULATING SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN LATE THIS AFTERNOON OR EARLY THIS EVENING...AND CONTINUE INTO TONIGHT.”

I had to leave the Strada at home today under cover. While I did get my first ride in the snow out of the way the other night no need to push it unnecessarily. I figured since it’s supposed to start snowing by 4pm and I have to stay late Id get a ride into work today. I made sure to cover the scooter before I left. I’m a little disappointed about having to leave it behind but I already have enough to worry about today. I will keep everyone updated on what mother nature really has intended for us, hopefully it’s not that bad. I will also have to fix the pictures from this weekend for some reason they appear to be down right now, stay tuned.

700 Miles in the Snow

My scooter has reached 700 miles without major incident although it happened in the snow. I got a reality check this weekend when the temperatures dipped below freezing and we were hit with our first snow. I almost wasn't going to ride but I didn't want to leave my scooter behind. Besides I was going to have to do it sooner or later might as well get it over with. In general it wasn't that bad. I did feel the scoot fishing around a little. Im sure my nerves didn't help the situation. I was very relieved to get home. I grabbed my camera and came back out to take some pictures.

It costs a BMW X3 driver more money per kilometre just for tyres than it costs to fuel a 125cc scooter. Speaking at a BDO Spencer Steward presentation recently, tax professor Matthew Lester pointed out that the fat tyres of an X3 cost R1,50 per kilometre. The average scooter sips just 0,04 litres of petrol (worth 23c) per kilometre.

This could be one of the reasons why two-wheeled vehicle sales are growing at a much faster rate than cars. According to statistics released by the Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributions (Amid), sales of motorbikes in the 0-150cc category posted a year-on-year gain of 100% for the month of October (2288 vs 1144 units).

LED Bulb Replacement

So I’ve gone ahead and ordered a set of replacement LED bulbs for the stock running lights, turn signals, and brake. I realize there has been a lot of discussion regarding using LED bulbs as replacement but not much information. With any luck they will all fit and work but I figure I will try it out to see. Hopefully they will arrive by the weekend so I can get them installed. I will be sure to take before and after photos. The thing I will be most interested to test is the brake light. Supposedly the one I ordered has a motion sensor whereby upon hard braking it will flash rapidly, under normal deceleration it is constant. Not sure how this will work on a scooter but was informed it should. I will be sure to report back with all the details.

Seeing behind you on a motorcycle has always been a problem. Philadelphia Center City Scooter Parking Bill

I have received word from Councilman DiCicco's office that he will be introducting a bill for designated SCOOTER PARKING in Philly! WE NEED TO FILL CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS when the bill is introduced! Rally the troops! NOVEMBER 30th at 2:00pm. City Hall. In general, the bill will designate scooter parking on every other block in Center City.There will be opposition so we must attend to show our support if it is going to happen!!! We will meet at the South Broad st side of City Hall waiting outside until 1:45, the group will meet up there and go inside to the Council chambers.

Invite to Visit Power Sports Factory

This past weekend I was invited by Power Sports Factory's President, Alan Leson, to visit their facilities. I believe that since I have been there they have moved, next door, to a bigger and better space. As some of you may know or have read I have been having some minor tuning issues with setting the air/fuel mixture as well as the idle. This weekend I changed out the spark plug which seemed to indicated the scoot was already running well. Being that I am learning on this scooter Alan has offered to show me how to tune it so that I may present these details here for everyone to follow. He has also been nice enough to extend an invitation to ride their new 4-valve head rx150. I can't tell you how excited I am! This is certainly a mod I am wanting to try and having the opportunity to ride their prototype will be a great experience. I will make sure to charge up my camera and have it with me. Anything in particular anyone wants to see just leave me a comment. I hope to make it out there sometime this week and will let everyone know about it here.

Wheels locked up

So I did it, I was able to lock my wheels. Not that I was trying but as is usually the scenario was forced to brake hard to avoid an accident. This car pulled out of a parking space on the left hand side of a one way street and cut across both lanes to make a right hand turn. I had a split second to sound my horn and grab the brakes. I felt and heard the brakes lock up, I believe atleast the front, but luckily I kept it upright and avoided the collision but not by much. I really wasn't going all that fast as I was coming off a light and saw the car acting suspicious but fast enough to give me a scare. Had I hit this guy I certainly would have found myself flying over his hood. Get things the brakes worked, despite locking, and I was able to keep it up.

Weekend Update

Not much new to report this weekend. There was a local rally here in town which unfortunatly I missed. As with most weekends I slept a lot and spent part of it working on my scooter but really didn’t have too much time to get everything I wanted accomplished. For starters I am still having some low end bogging which I am told is most likely the fuel mix. I will attend to this as soon as possible but in the meantime a more alarming issue has come up with my front brake. It appears as those my front brake has come loose causing movement around the calipers resulting in noticeable affects as well as an irritating noise. I tried to tighten it as best I could but think I need more tools as the brake itself is tight to the scoot but the housing, around the pads, appears loose. Hopefully I will have the tools I need soon as I almost had to leave my scoot at a friend’s house when it started raining. I just don’t feel that safe with the scooter in its current state. I did manage to stop by a local scooter shop here and drool over some of the 250 Kymcos. They had a quick look at my scooter and had general good things to say about it, especially given the price point. This made me feel a little better about my purchase although in reality I think some flack is to be expected. They also gave me a nice new NGK plug to try out which I will get to eventually. Both the local shop and PSF both asked why one would change out the plug but seeing as how eventually I will do it I might as well be prepared. As soon as I have time and get off before dark during these shortened days I will get right on these repairs. At least my ride in to work during the week is short and they have finally paved the roads. Oh yea and Septa is back off strike which is great news as the traffic, especially on Friday was just awful. I finally began to appreciate the art of lane splitting as I simply couldn’t cope with it all and witness a few motorcycles doing the same. Don’t think I will ever turn it into a custom as I like to both give and receive respect on the road but certainly does come in handy in certain situations such as this.

Almost Run Over by Public Transport

I apologize I haven’t been updating the blog as frequently but work has been really getting to me lately. I did however want to make a comment about my ride into work today. I was almost side-swiped right off the bridge by a Septa bus, not one of those big ones as they are on strike but by one of the large commuter ones for handicapped people. I guess he just flat out didn’t see me but as I was cruising in the right lane he just moves right over into me. Luckily I had enough room on the shoulder as I honked my tiny sounding horn. I decided I better get this jokers attention and proceeded to get right next to him and bang on the side and windows as hard as I could. I think it did the trick as he slowed down (mind you still in my lane) and I was able to pass by him while looking back and shaking my head in anger. This just goes to prove how hard it can be for others to see us on our scooters and how important it is to pay attention at all times even, and especially, since the other guy most likely isn’t. So for everyone out there please ride safe and stay heads up out there!

Bogging/Stalling Scooter Fix

Recently I have been running into issues with my scooter not running as smoothly as it should but I think I have found the culprit. The first symptoms I began to notice were while riding in the rain whereby the scooter would bog down at low speeds (essentially studdering under acceleration) and was idling funny at stop. Sometimes the scooter would want to stall out and would require gas while at other times it would idle strong even pulling at the scoot a bit. Well my solution was simple, remove the air filter and soak it in gasoline before letting it dry and applying a bit of gear oil before putting it back. While it was out soaking I also cleaned the carb (outside with soap and water then blew dry it with compressed air). The end result seems to be that my scooter runs stronger and smoother with little hesitation at low speeds now. My next step will be to replace the spark plug with an iridium one but I will have to wait on Pep Boys or Auto Zone to get one for me. Just thought I would pass along this information as others might find it useful. One thing to note is that the symptoms I had experienced are often felt either during or after significant riding in the rain. It is important that if you do so you check and or clean your air filter more regularly.

Your Motorcycle/Scooter May Not Be Legal Products you buy online may be illegal in the United States. That's the warning from the Texas Department of Transportation. Motorcycles and scooters are illegally being imported to the U.S. They are sold online at websites like E-Bay and through private dealers. The vehicles do not meet environmental standards and cannot be registered in the State of Texas. A number of people have already been turned away from registration at the Lubbock County Tax Office. "Without people actually seeing the vehicle for themselves, there's no way to know it has appropriate labels indicating they do not pass EPA and DOT," said Bobby Meeks, TXDOT Regional Manager. Bobby Meeks says legal vehicles do have labels indicating they pass EPA standards.

Long wet weekend

There hasn't been anything exciting going on recently with all this wet weather so I've been a little slow in updating the blog here. I did learn of a new watering hole though soon to open called the 'Sidecar Cafe' in philly which has promise. I also got some new waterproof joe rocket gloves to keep the feeling in my hands. I think I ride a little better when my hands aren't numb. I also picked up this nice little cooler off ebay. I wanted something I could use to pick up sandwiches and such as under the seat can get pretty hot. This is what I came up with: http://tinyurl.com/dvxz3 . (Note: I offered $12 for this and it was accepted.) This cooler is perfect as it fits right on the floor and leaves plenty of room for your feet. There are pockets on every side and bungess on top for anything extra you need to bring with you. On top of everything it folds up and can be stored under the seat when not needed. Ive included a couple of pictures but I will update tomorrow with it on the scooter as I just got back from riding and its too dark now.

Unfortunately, most riders find out that their charging system has failed when they end up broken down on the side of the road. A little advanced warning can keep you from being stranded in the middle of nowhere. Now you'll know at a glance whether or not your charging system is working properly. This L.E.D. Battery Gauge is an array of L.E.D.s indicating the operating voltage of the bikes electrical system. Green L.E.D.s represent the normal operating range of your charging system, 12.5v to 14.5v. Amber L.E.D.s warn the rider that the bike is not charging. If the reading drops below 10v or exceeds 15v, a flashing red L.E.D. will alert the rider of an impending stall or the possibility of damage to the battery and/or sensitive electronic components on the motorcycle. Simple two-wire connection and a compact size (about 2"x3/4"x3/16") make installation a breeze. A daylight sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the L.E.D.s. They are bright during the day for visibility and dim at night so as not to blind the rider.

Virgin BoomTube Super Sale

I recently featured the boomtube EX speakers here on the blog. I recently purchased a fanny pack with mesh side pockets and this system rocks. I can wear it while scooting and still hear it. Well www.woot.com has the non-rechargeable (despite the item description saying EX) for 19.99 + 5 s/h. Just thought I would pass this info along. These plus some rechargeable batteries would make a nice setup. Best "ipod" portable speakers system I've heard yet.
